As a TMOD, if you want to ignite curiosity among members about your session, choose a theme that finds popular mention in movies, books and conversations. Aliens is one of them. Here is a script by TM Manish from Mumbai that does this brilliantly. Have a look.
ALL ABOUT ALIENS
Is earth the only singing, dancing and whistling sphere out there or are there more such worlds where Monday blues is actually a thing? Are we alone in the vast sea of darkness and nothingness or is there life like ours lurking in some corner of the universe?
Alien gossip is one subject that catches the fancy of everyone from 5 to 85 year olds. And it’s not even a recent discussion. Way back in 1450 B.C, the Egyptians claimed to have witnessed bright circles of light in the sky. Since then, different instances of strange sightings have been claimed from every corner of the world from flying objects to witnessing actual aliens to even abduction by the aliens.
However, no concrete proof of the existence of any such life is available to confirm their existence. Too often people who claim to have come across such encounters are fame hungry looking for a quick dose of stardom while in several cases, they are found to be a victim of sleep paralysis.
Yet these theories have gained wild momentum. A top secret Air Force base in the United States commonly called Area 51 is an outcome of one such theory. While the details of the Air Base are classified owing to its importance to the government, theories about it being a lab where the US government actually hosts alien lives and experiment on them is abound. And given the mystery around the air base as well as alien lives, it only makes connecting the two a great gossip material.
Well, we may not know a lot about aliens but I can definitely tell you everything about our Toastmasters meeting. So for the benefit of our guests and new members, let me tell you how a Toastmasters meeting functions. Every Toastmasters meeting is divided into three parts. The first part is the Prepared Speech section where our members prepare a 5 to 7 minute speech in advance, get it mentored and deliver the same. The second part is the fun and exciting Table Topic Session where anyone can speak for 1 to 2 minutes on a topic given by our Table Topic Master. And the last part is the evaluation session where our General Evaluator will give a comprehensive report on the entire meeting. Let me invite our General Evaluator for the day TM Name.
Once the GE is done explaining his role, invite the Prepared Speakers. After this session, continue with the theme as under.
One of the most sophisticated efforts to discover alien life is the SETI institute located in Mountain View, California. SETI is an abbreviation for “Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence.” It is a privately funded nonprofit organization that has scanned more than 1000 stars at a cost of $5 million per year for alien radio signals. Researchers and scientist engaged with the institute use a variety of high tech telescopes to study distant stars and analyze their capacity to host alien life. In fact, the institute has made software to sift through these signals available for public download so that the efforts to search for alien life widens. This means that you and I can actually download this software in our home PC and be a part of the most epic scavenger hunt. For your information more than 100000 people already have.
Right now, our Table Topic Master has another fun mission planned for us. It’s time for impromptu speaking. Please help me welcome the Table Topic Master for the day TM Name.
Once the Table Topic session is over, continue with the theme as under.
As much as the gossip and the possibility of another life in space sounds interesting, intelligent minds have actually warned against the idea of looking for them. Popular physicist Stephen Hawking believes that finding these lives may be against the wellbeing of humanity. And there is some sound logic to this warning bell. In all likelihood, any alien life we may find will be unintelligent microorganisms at the earliest stage of evolution. This does not pose any challenge to our existence. However, in the off chance that alien life found happens to be a super intelligent race of beings looking for host planets rich with resources just like us, mankind may just send an invitation to be their dinner. As they say, curiosity killed the cat. And curiosity is a tough feeling to ignore. Mankind by its very nature is a curious race. No wonder we have been looking at far away stars since the very beginning of time. Well right now, it’s time now for the third session of the day – the evaluation session. Please help me welcome the General Evaluator for the day TM Name.
Once the evaluation session is over, conclude the theme as under.
Fellow Toastmasters, it may take science some time to make any development in the subject matter. Frankly, there is a chance that any meaningful development may not happen in our lifetime at all. But in the meantime, if you wish to sate your curiosity on the subject, you are in luck. Hollywood has stretched its creative limits and come up with some great movies on aliens. Alien abduction, ET, the Invasion are just a few among them. In fact, Wikipedia has an entire page that lists movies based on Extraterrestrial Life. And if you happen to be more of a reader, than “The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy” may be the perfect read for you. It’s a New York Times bestselling book that finds popular references in tons of books, movies and every day conversations. And after all of this, you may stumble upon some great content for your next Toastmasters speech as well.
It’s time now for awards.
