REINVENT YOURSELF

Phone companies roll out new models every year. Restaurants keep changing their menus from time to time. Even Toastmasters re-did the entire educational module from CC/CL to Pathways. Hell, I modified my bedroom just last year. Do you know why?

Coz it’s important to change things around us from time to time. Static things don’t just tend to get boring but they also start pulling you down. So it’s important that we alter the things surrounding us. Some call it stepping outside the comfort zone; others define it as challenging the status quo. Call it whatever you want, but the important thing is doing it.

Just as changing the things around us is important, so is changing ourselves from time to time. When you stay the same, you don’t just risk being out dated but also boring. And the one person who spends the most time with you is you yourself. Would like to spend time with a boring person? No right. So let’s learn today how to bring about this change in yourself or as I like to call it reinventing yourself.

The first thing you should start doing is learn something new. It can be a new language. Or a new skill like dancing, cooking, playing the guitar. Kudos to the new member in our club you have already checked this box off by deciding to learn Public Speaking. The old members may perhaps learn leadership by taking club office roles. As you can see, it can be anything as long as you are learning and it’s something new. One new element in your life can give your entire personality a whole new makeover or as I called it help you reinvent yourself.

We will learn more about this but before we move ahead, let me inform the new members and guests how Toastmasters work. Every Toastmasters meeting is divided into three parts. The first part is the prepared speech section where members prepare a speech in advance, get it mentored and deliver the same. The second part is the impromptu session where anyone including the guest can participate. And the third part is the most important evaluation session where we will all learn how to improve ourself. Let me now invite the General Evaluator to explain his role. Please help me welcome TM Name with a big round of applause.

Another strategy to reinvent yourself is to meet with new people who are less similar like you. By default, we all tend to hang out with people who are like ourselves. We pick them in colleges or from the same department in the offices. Hanging out with people who are less like ourselves helps us to see life from their perspectives. Wanna find these different people – call up people from your school you haven’t spoken to in years. Join a gym. That will take care of your health as well. Join organisation like Rotary where people from diverse background come together. Basically just meet people other than the regular people you meet regularly.

The one important trick in this whole reinvent yourself mission is this – Remind yourself of that one thing you want to do in life and do it. We all have that one big dream that we are miles away from. The one dream that we are all going to achieve in future. Start out now. Do you want to start a business? Today is just right. Do it. Do you want to learn flying? Enrol yourself today. Someone may want to start coaching. There are people out there who want to learn stuff – start today. This one step will go far in helping you reinvent yourselves. Who knows this one step may actually change the entire trajectory of your life.

Fellow Toastmasters, we looked at some bold steps you can take to reinvent yourself. Let me conclude with one small thing that you can do to kick start this entire process. Break routine. Try doing everything that you do in a different way. While going home today, take a different route. When sleeping, sleep on the other side of the bed. Tomorrow morning change the toothpaste you use. If there are adverse outcomes, you can always change back but may be you may just discover better things by just changing your routine.
