TRAVEL IS LIFE

TMOD theme on Travel
Travel is life

“Travelling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller” This is by far one of the most resonating quotes on travelling that you would come across. If you need any more validation, just remember the number of stories you tell every time you return from a vacation or even when someone just mentions the name of the place you once went for vacation.

In fact, try to remember the number of time our Toastmasters have recounted their travelling experiences in their Table Topics. Some of us have even woven an entire Prepared Speech around our travel experiences. Travelling no doubt makes a carves a storyteller into each one of us.

So today, let me tell you some of the different types of travel that people undertake during their lives. When most people think about travelling, holiday trips during vacation are the ones that generally come to their mind. The time they went to Goa or Bali perhaps. That also happens to be a big money spinning machine around the world. It gives rise to several industries like aviation, hospitality, tour companies, even entire clothing lines dedicated to just travel attire. In fact, there are entire economies of nations that count on just tourism to generate jobs for their people and make up their GDP like Maldives of Seychelles.

But if you think that is the only type of travel or the major travel, you may be wrong. Over the course of our session today, I will tell you about various other types of travel but for now let me tell you how a Toastmasters meeting is conducted.

Any Toastmaster meeting is divided into three parts. The first part is the prepared speech session where members prepare their speeches in advance, get it mentored and deliver the same. The second part is the fun filled Table Topic session where anyone from the audience can come up and give a 1 to 2 minute speech on a topic given by the Table Topic Master. And the third part is the most important evaluation section where our GE or General Evaluator for the day will give a report on the entire meeting today. Having said that, let me invite on the stage our GE for the day – TM Name. Can we have a big round of applause everyone please?

After the General Evaluator is done explaining his role, you may start the prepared speech session. Once this is over, continue with the theme.

Let us now look at a few more types of travel that people undertake.

Business travel – This is one of the major contributors to the entire industry. Aviation companies as well as hotels depend on them for a big chunk of their annual revenue. In fact if this travel were to stop tomorrow somehow, entire companies would be forced to shut down.

Educational travel – This may not seem like a travel prima facie since a person stays in the city or country for a long period of time. But if you consider the bare facts – a person moving out for a certain period of time only to come back later, this can also be classified as travel. Considering the number of students who head to countries like US or UK each year to pursue higher studies, this is another major type of travel.

Pilgrimage – Many people undertake travelling to fulfill their religious purposes. Just to give you an example, Mecca is a popular pilgrimage destination that many Muslims make every year. Similarly the Vatican City is another destination that finds popular mention in pilgrimage tours.

I am sure all of this sounds very exciting. After all travelling is always exciting. It’s time now for another exciting session of the meeting – the Table Topic Session. Please help me welcome the Table Topic Master for the day TM Name.

Once this session is over, you may continue with the theme as under.

Let me introduce you to some more types of travel that you may not have heard of.

Medical Tourism – This is true for a large section of the people across the world. People in smaller towns and villages often travel to nearest cities in search of better medical facilities. Many people travel across continents in search of cheaper medical procedures. For example – India is a popular medical tourism destination for many people living in western countries.

Adventure travel – Some people travel merely for the thrill of adventurous activities. They travel to offbeat locations to take on some challenging experiences. For ex – travelling to Amazon for a trekking experience through the rain forests.

That’s been a long travel. Let’s invite the General Evaluator to give ourselves some break. Please help me welcome TM Name.

Once the evaluation session is over, you may conclude the theme as under.

One popular form of travel that has been emerging since some time is solo travel. Many people like the idea of travelling alone to distant locations in the hopes of becoming more independent or discovering oneself or even to meet new people

Volunteering for a noble cause is another travel that has found acceptance among many people. People willing to give back to the society or just generating a positive spirits within them often undertake such travel.

I would like to conclude this session with another quote that I really love from Dalai Lama. He says “Once a year, go someplace you’ve never been before.”

It’s time now for the awards
